Have you ever found yourself thinking: how does Harry Potter’s struggle to defeat Voldemort relate to my difficulty with surviving middle school? Or, why does Alice get to roam around a magical wonderland while I spend my weekends walking around the block?
It can be difficult to pinpoint the similarities between classic novels and everyday life. However, that will not be the case in BEC’s first-ever middle school book club. Whale Rider follows a young Maori girl as she aspires to one day become chief of her tribe, who are said to have descended from a legendary “whale rider.” This novel discusses both broader environmental change and how global warming specifically impacts the whales surrounding her island. Students in this class will improve their analysis skills and ability to relate literary themes to their own communities in Chicago while simultaneously analyzing current articles to shed further light on challenges facing our environment today. Students will be provided with supplemental practice work after each class. Please note there will be no make-up times or refunds for missed group sessions. |
